Classical portraiture with personal surroundings
This selection moves between formal oil portraits and more informal scenes. A piano, a uniform or a much-loved dog can help describe a sitter’s life without taking attention away from the face. Wedding paintings and portraits of couples offer another way to preserve a relationship in a hand-painted work.
Choosing this gallery for your commission
Explore this gallery if you are considering a formal portrait commission, a wedding or anniversary painting, or a portrait that includes a meaningful setting. Tell us which details matter most: expression, clothing, an instrument, a pet or the atmosphere of a particular room.
Choose a painting above to view it at its original proportions. Note the example you like and include “Artist 2” in your enquiry so we can discuss the right direction for your portrait.
Commission a custom oil portrait in Canada
Our Toronto studio helps clients across Canada commission hand-painted portraits from photographs. Start with your reference images, the number of people or pets and an approximate canvas size. We will review the references, discuss the composition and provide a personalised proposal outlining the selected artist, price and estimated timing.
Starting prices are quoted in Canadian dollars and are based on one person or pet, unframed. Each artist sets their own rates; additional subjects and detailed backgrounds can change the final price.
A 30% deposit starts the commission once the proposal is agreed, with the remaining 70% due on completion. Allow approximately 4–10 weeks; your proposal will confirm the estimated schedule. Discuss a gift date before booking so timing can be checked.
Questions about this portrait gallery
Can a portrait include a uniform, instrument or pet?
The examples here include these subjects. Please provide clear reference photographs of the person and any important details. We will confirm what can be included and how additional subjects or a more detailed background affect the quote.
What photographs should I send?
Send the clearest original files you have, preferably with natural light and visible facial detail. Avoid small screenshots or heavily filtered images where possible. Include alternative photographs if they help explain expression, colouring or an important detail.
Can I discuss changes?
Tell us your preferences before painting begins, including the background, clothing and composition. If you have feedback during the commission, share it with the studio so we can discuss suitable adjustments with the artist.
Where can I compare other subjects and styles?
