1. The photograph and composition
Choose the clearest original files you have, with natural expressions and visible facial details. Send a few favourites if you are unsure. For blurred, damaged or incomplete older photographs, the artist can use additional pictures and notes about the person’s features to help reconstruct missing content. We can also discuss combining separate images and choosing which background details to keep.

You do not need to decide on a size alone. Based on your photos, the number of subjects and the proposed composition, we can recommend a suitable canvas size. Share the available wall space too. Framing labour is complimentary; the frame is charged separately.

Finding a portrait artist: your questions
How do I find a portrait artist near me?
Start with your city guide and compare the artists’ complete galleries. Our oil portraits are commissioned from photographs, so you can choose the style you love wherever you are in Canada. Send your favourite photos for advice on the composition and a suitable canvas size.
How do I choose the best photograph for my portrait?
Send the original, highest-resolution files available, with clear facial features and an expression you want to remember. Avoid screenshots, heavy filters and strong shadows where possible. If several photos matter to you, send them together: we can advise which will work best and discuss combining them into one painting.
Can you work from a blurry or damaged old photograph?
Older photos do not need to be perfect. If an image is blurred, damaged or missing details, send it along with any additional photographs of the person and notes about their distinctive features. The artist can use these references to help reconstruct the missing content, with the proposed interpretation discussed before painting.
Can I choose a particular portrait painter?
Yes. Open a gallery and use its artist request link, or select an artist above. You can also ask us to recommend an artist after reviewing your photographs, preferred style and budget. Availability is confirmed during the enquiry.
Can you recommend a portrait size and arrange framing?
Yes. We can recommend a canvas size based on your reference photographs, the proposed composition, the number of people or pets and where the painting will hang. Framing labour is complimentary; the frame is charged separately. Your proposal confirms the artwork and any frame cost. See our portrait prices and sizes guide for an introduction.
Are these original oil paintings or printed photographs?
These are hand-painted oil portrait commissions made from reference photographs, not photo prints with an oil-painting filter. Explore the real commission examples to see reference photos and finished artworks.
Can I commission a portrait from a regional area?
Yes, you can enquire from outside the six cities listed. Send your town or postal code, reference photos and preferred artist. We will confirm the proposal and delivery arrangements for your location.
Not sure which artist to choose?
Share your photographs, location and the style you are drawn to. We will help you choose suitable photos, shape the composition and recommend a canvas size. Framing labour is complimentary; the frame is charged separately.
