Custom portrait commissions in Vancouver

A family gathering, a wedding photograph or a portrait with a favourite outdoor setting can become an original oil painting. For clients in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, the process begins with photographs and a discussion of the composition, whether you prefer a close likeness or broader, expressive brushwork.

Choosing an artist and a composition

When planning a portrait commission in Vancouver, consider how much of the setting should remain visible. A beach, garden or mountain backdrop may be meaningful, but the people still need enough space on the canvas. Share your preferred photographs so the studio can help you consider the options.

Explore individual portrait commissions, family portraits from photographs, wedding and couple paintings, custom pet portraits and equine portraits to compare subjects and approaches.

WHY COMMISSION A PORTRAIT

An original oil portrait turns a meaningful photograph into a work of art created for you. Celebrate a family, a wedding or a personal milestone; honour someone you love; or capture the character of a much-loved pet.

Colour, texture and brushwork give each painting its own character. Your choice of artist, composition and canvas size shapes a portrait that feels personal and belongs in your home.

You do not need to be an art expert to begin. Our Toronto studio helps you explore the options and develop a clear brief, wherever you are in Canada.

CHOOSING YOUR ARTIST

The right artist is the one whose work matches your vision. Compare likeness, expression, colour and finish—from carefully observed detail to looser, expressive brushwork.

Start with the work you love

Explore the artwork above and tell us which style you prefer. We can help you consider your reference photographs, the number of people or pets, and the composition that best suits your canvas.

A clear proposal before you begin

Your personalised proposal outlines your selected artist, canvas size, composition, estimated timing and price. Starting prices are based on one person or pet, without a frame; each artist sets their own rates, and more complex commissions are quoted individually.

Planning your Vancouver portrait

Do I need to attend a sitting?

Our commissions begin with photographs and an online discussion. Our studio is in Toronto; this page serves clients in Vancouver and does not imply that every artist is based locally.

How much does a custom oil portrait cost?

Starting prices are shown in Canadian dollars for one person or pet, unframed. Prices vary by artist, size and composition. Discuss additional subjects, framing and delivery in your personalised quote.

What is the payment and timing?

A 30% deposit begins the agreed commission, with 70% due on completion. Typical timing is approximately 4–10 weeks, with the schedule confirmed in your proposal. Tell us about any gift date before booking.
